Kudos: a singular noun meaning honor, glory, acclaim or accolade.

Like any organization, we appreciate receiving a kudos for a job well done, and are pleased to share this August 2012 letter from Julienne Friday. Julienne, who lives in Forest City, Iowa was one of our exhibitors at Festival 2012.

Dear Ms. Mulder,

I would like to take this opportunity to case some of my thoughts into words and share them with you. When I applied for your show in early spring and then didn’t hear anything from you, my friend told me that I should forget it because she didn’t think you would be organized in time. When I was preparing to leave for Iowa City, I received a call from you advising me that the show has been moved into the Community Building, but I was still far from convinced that this was going to be a viable affair and had considerable reservations.

When I arrived at the Community Building, I was met by a smiling gentleman who graciously escorted me to my space, he gave directions to park at the back of the building into the parking space – not an easy task with a full sized pick-up! Next, a group of 4-H’ers swarmed over the truck and proceeded to unload my artwork at record pace. All of the Art Council people were easily identifiable by their bright blue shirts and if I had questions, everyone was more than eager to provide assistance. It was even impressive that you had a “garbage/re-cycling” director.

The art show itself provided a wonderful opportunity to meet other artists – most of whom I had never met before – and afforded an unparalleled venue for making contacts for future projects and outlets for exchange and conversation. At the close of the day, people came from everywhere to help tear down and load up artwork. There is only one word which describes what I experienced – IMPRESSIVE!

I am not a neophyte to the art community – I have exhibited in Des Moines, Clear Lake, Emmetsburg – just to name a few places in Iowa – and I have exhibited in Minnesota and Wisconsin as well. Never have I encountered such courteous, helpful, thoughtful, and yes, ORGANIZED people! You folks are a credit to your community.

Coming from a small town in Iowa, I am very cognizant of the difficulties of trying to maintain a vital downtown and engaged community. If this art show is any indication of your commitment and conscientiousness, you are well on your way to building a vibrant and successful community. Suffice it to say that I was pleased to be part of your community – if only for a day. Thank you for inviting me.

Julienne Friday
